Animals in the Heat Wave (tips)

If you have animals,
be they pets &/or livestock,
they might take some extra consideration during hot spells.
Our forecast is for triple degree weather for the next 10 days.
If you are part of this forecast as well,
here are a few tips to help keep the critters comfy.

Water!
Okay, this should be obvious,
but clean fresh water is a must.
One step further:
for livestock troughs, if you have a chest freezer,
put a few inches of water in the bottom of the bucket and freeze it
during the night.  Mid morning 'pop' the ice into the trough
to encourage drinking.
If you don't have a chest freezer,
you can still make reusable ice cubes.
I save vinegar jugs, fill about 2/3 - 3/4 of water and freeze.
You can put the lid on and toss in the trough to cool the water.
(Regular milk jugs will work once, but they split when frozen.)
You can do the same for bunnies, chickens, and other small animals
just on a smaller scale - or just add some ice cubes to their water.

Shade &/or Shelter
Animals with enough room will find the coolest place
to lay down or hide out in the heat of the day.
If you have livestock in a pen,  even a temporary tarp/canopy
propped up will help.
You can sprinkle the area down, that helps too.
Evaporation is a cooling process.
If they are in a shed or barn,
Water down the structure in the heat of the day.
(If allowed and not in drought area.)
Another thing to do is wet burlap sacks and hang over the open windows
or in a tree or anywhere the animals "hang out."
This acts like a swamp cooler.
If you have wire bunny hutches, hang these over one side.
You can also "insulate" a barn or shed
by stacking bales of hay or straw on the hottest side.

Feed
Animals will naturally eat less in the heat.
This means what they do eat needs to be of good quality.

DO NOT
try to cool an animal down too fast if they are hot.
I have seen people put a dog into hypothermic shock
by putting it into a bath of ice water because they thought
the it was too hot.

Again obviously,
if in doubt about the condition of your animal, call a vet.

Animals are stronger and smarter than we often give
them credit for.  If given the opportunity, they will fend for themselves
and do what best suits the circumstance.
It's when we (humans) interfere that they seem to have problems.

One last note:
Do these things for yourself as well!
Stay hydrated, try not to over do it in the heat of the day,
and skip the ho-ho's and go for the greens.
If you become ill, who will tend the critters?

If you have more tips,
please feel free to share in the comments.
Different areas and topography mean different 'tricks' that work.
We all benefit from sharing.

Drying Apricots & Too Much Eventfulness!

Why we don't go on vacations...
Last weekend being long for the holiday,
we decided to take a little trip.
Not too far, just outta Dodge for 3 days.
I found a great little camp site with 5 sites
each with its own picnic table & shade trees between.
It was at the end of a short street so no traffic etc.
We were camper #7 to pull in.
We were parked on a crusty lawn in the blazing sun,
no table & only some lilacs separating us from the owners house.
"Oh, well, we'll be out and about quite a bit.
It will be okay."
We had been up since 5 AM because that's just what time we wake.
Fireworks didn't start until 10:15 PM.
We didn't stay to watch all of them
as we were falling asleep and didn't want to be
in drunken traffic or teenager traffic or whatever other traffic.
We went back to the camper and were out by the time
our heads hit the pillows.
About 2:30 AM the owners family all came
rolling in with hoopin' and hollerin' & language like I won't repeat, and
went directly between us and the house.
The next day, the owner apologized then proceeded to inform
me that there would be different music at each bar in town.
Mr. LB & I talked and decided just to come home.
On the way home, we saw Mr. LB's brother fishing
so ended up stopping and fishing a little longer than we should have.
I took over driving when Mr. LB started snoring behind the wheel.
He hadn't slept since 2:30 AM.  I did a little.
We rolled in about 9:30-10 PM.
We slept in until 6-6:30 then decided to go get a load of wood.
They opened the forest since the last rain
and we were home anyways.
It turned into a very long hot (100+) day.
Got a nice load of red fir and returned home about 9 PM.
I was so hot and tired, I didn't care about food.
Mr. LB had to eat or he would have been sick the next day as
he uses up all his spare calories.
I cooked while he showered.  Then he ate while I showered.
Monday we were still zapped.
Tuesday, I picked up some bulk meat to divy up and freeze.
We still hadn't unloaded the wood.
Wed. my M-I-L gave me 2 big boxes of apricots so I got to work on those.
I don't care for them fresh but love them dried.
Five racks on the dryer going constantly since Wed. night.
Still have 4 or 5 cookie sheets (so they are single layer)
in the little room where they will keep better.
This isn't even all of them:)
Thursday, I put some lamb chops in marinate for Sunday's company.
Today (Sat.) was my first day home in a while.
Got the lawn mowed and watered, did 4 or 5 loads of laundry
which I usually do Thursdays, did most of the ironing, made a gallon
of homemade ice cream and was cleaning house since we have
company coming tomorrow, .
If there was a 'weeds in the garden' competition,
I would win - so weeded a ton in the garden.
Bustling and busy and sweaty all day.
About 7:30, went to do up the tail end of some dishes and start dinner.
No Water!
Mr. LB is at Home Depot (over an hour away) with my dad, as I type this,
purchasing a new well pump.
I'm not sure how long it will take to install it, but
I am thankful we live next to a river.
I went down with my towel and soap.
It was rather invigorating to say the least.
Hoping we get it all put together and have water before company.
I'm curious - what does a day off feel like?

Until next time,

PS- Mr. LB just called: they are 30-40 min. out, and
they are hoping to get the pump in tonight. It's 9 PM.

!!!!!!! High Waters !!!!!!!

Over the past couple days,
there has been flooding in the area.
Our lazy little river that flows at a meager 50ish cfs
in the summer was raging up over 4000.
Usually those large rocks are
several feet above the water.
The cool part is that the waterfalls are running.
This is 'our' waterfall.
It actually belongs to the person who owns
the property across the road,
but it faces us.
We are pretty fortunately situated
in that our house sits at a nice level
above flood stage.
Farther down river, there were folks who
were not so happily situated.
I don't know that there was any real damage
as far as homes go,
but fields, yards, and corals were all under water.
Livestock was moved to higher ground.
Today it dropped back down below flood stage for us,
but there are several tributaries that flow into it
as it flows on down so that things are still
pretty soggy down river.
I am very thankful it was no worse than it was.
