Something or Nothing Important

 Hello Friends~
It's nearly the end of March.
That seems a little unreal since we just celebrated
the arrival of the New Year.
The days are getting longer no matter which time
they choose to call it.
It certainly is a true spring.
One day it's freezing and the next is sunny.
For the past two years, I've had very few blossoms
on my lilac bush which is directly out the kitchen
window as it should be.
I figured out a little too late last year
that it was due to being so dry.
I've been keeping my eye on it this year.
And of course so far we've had decent precipitation.
I'm not complaining about that as I'm looking forward
to seeing and smelling those amazing clumps of beauty.
This past weekend, we ended up getting a new rototiller.
We meaning Hubby.
Then he "played" with it most of the day Sunday.
We had so many weeds after last year's heat dome.
Our grounds that we till are all nice and clean now.
Now, we'll just have to keep them weed free.
Then of course it will be planting time.
It's always so exciting when things go in the ground.
It's a true season of hope and expectation.
As we place that tender little green in the dirt,
we can almost taste the delicious fruits and veggies.
Isn't that how it should be?
We should see promise in more things.
Last year, on a whim (shame on me)
I bought a little greenhouse on clearance.
I am now glad I did.
I'm having so much fun with it.
Now I want a bigger one (oy!).
I have my peppers: jalapenos and Anaheim,
tomatoes: three varieties, sweetpeas, hollyhocks,
balsam, cabbage, broccoli, and some herbs.
I've enjoyed watching the little seeds emerge and spring to life.
It seems almost silly that one can be excited over
such a little event.
Then again, it seems silly that one wouldn't be excited
for such a happening.
It's the silly little things like a sprouting seed
or a bulging bud about to burst open
that bring so much joy to life.
The big events are going to happen.
They refuse to be ignored.
But the little things that cost nothing and happen quietly
can lift a spirit if only they are noticed.
Those little unimportant things are really significant.
As we progress into spring,
I'm trying to take my own advice
and minimize screen time.
In winter with the long evenings,
it's easy to justify when it's dark and not much is happening.
There are things I want to do now with longer days.
Also, there is a lot that I don't think is healthy right now
or maybe just not healthy for me.
There are so many living in fear, in anger, or in naïve bliss.
Just because the weather is stormy in one area of life,
doesn't mean it can't be sunny in another.
Just as a blizzard is blowing in one place and
in another the warm rays are tanning bare feet.
I feel like I need to find peace in those sunny spots of life.
So if I'm not around making lots of comments,
please forgive me.
Sometimes, I need to listen more than speak
which is the opposite of much online interaction.
I'm here.
I'm living.
I just have to catch my breath
and find some peace in nature.
Doing simple tasks with no interference or interruption
has become a rarity.
That's part of what I'm seeking -
that completion of thought.
That's the peace I'm looking for right now.
I hope that makes sense.
Until next time~
enjoy this beautiful spring.

  1. I think it is all true we are in a very deep cold right now after a tease of warmth when things were getting green. I love seeing things come to life. We do a very small garden and I planted garlic last year I cannot wait to see if it worked. I am trying to do less screen time but I have a horrid addiction I carry my phone around and every little ding I pick it up. I need to get better with just being.

  2. While I never had the sizeable garden you have, I sure did enjoy my homegrown tomatoes. Since I am surrounded by woods with lots of pine trees there is no place on this plot of land where the plants would get adequate sun. So as soon as the farmer's market opens in town they keep me supplied with my fresh garden tomatoes.
BTW, I'm happy you acted on a whim last year as that green house will give you a good start with your planting season.

  3. The weather here is still cold. This morning it's -10C and we're supposed to get freezing rain tomorrow. I hope it's the last blast of winter for this year.
I agree that we all need to search out the sunny spots in life, particularly now that the entire world is in crisis mode. I refuse to let myself dwell on all of that and instead try to focus on my own little corner of it, while praying for saner days elsewhere. Take care of you.

  4. Not only does it make sense, it makes beautifully perfect sense. The two things that I especially love are your statements that big things demand notice but the little things only bring hope if they are noticed and the one about just because it's stormy in one part of the world doesn't mean it isn't sunny elsewhere. I have heard many say how they feel guilty carrying on normally with what is going on in the world these days and I was a bit taken aback. Yes, my heart hurts for those caught in the ravages of war, but nothing is gained by the rest of the world coming to a stop and living in agony as well. There are lessons to be learned, yes, and there are times when it is beneficial to try to understand the loss, but it should be a moment in which we appreciate what is good in our own worlds and what is right. This is not artfully expressed, but I trust you understand the meaning behind my words. Enjoy your spring...ours is still a ways off apparently. We are under another winter storm watch...freezing rain with accumulating ice overnight followed by 2-4" of snow. My lilacs were disappointing the past few years...not because of lack of moisture but because they froze after sending out those buds.... 😢 ~Robin~

  5. That is completely justifiable Lady Locust. I am also more conscious of the longer days and need to pack more of the things that actually need doing in, not just the lazy answer of looking at a screen.

We seem to moving quickly from Spring to Summer, which is a bit disappointing and I hoped Spring would be around longer.

  6. Hope you get lots of blooms on your lilac bush. I've wanted one for such a long time. I did buy one and kept it in the little greenhouse for one year. It bloomed and smelled wonderful. When I planted it in the yard it started going downhill. Finally dug it up and have it back in a pot. Our weather is up and down. After lots of warm days, we just got out of the 20s at night with cold windy days. Spring will settle in soon. I like how you write and what you write about. Your garden spot looks rich and ready tp plant.

  7. Oh, that beautiful earth/! It is so satisfying to take care of the soil and to grow things. I did a ton of weeding yesterday.

  8. What do you mean I have no reply? I see plenty of comments on my blog, so it seems people are able to? All your planting sounds wonderful. I used to garden, but stopped a good long while ago. I didn't have much of a green thumb...my Dad sure did though back in the day. I think I'm probably on line as much in warmer days with longer light, but tend to break it up into smaller amounts of time at a sitting. Moving from inside to outside etc. Enjoy your planting.

  9. I am anxious to hear how you like Foxgloves and Hedgehog Days. It is my favorite book. Greenhouses are addicting. I would never have peppers or tomatoes without one. My lettuce and carrots look pretty good.
